Breast Cancer Awareness

A breast cancer diagnosis can stop you in your tracks and present with many questions as well as emotions about the future. Today, more than ever, breast cancer patients have more options with far better results than in the past. When considering your options, allow your doctor to help you make an informed decision based on facts, not fears. The factors to consider include physical characteristics, personal preferences, recovery time and logistical factors. Below are some simple terms and facts –

Lumpectomy

Surgery to remove the tumor while leaving healthy breast tissue surrounding it. This should be considered when breast cancer is detected early and the tumor is small. The benefits of this treatment include faster recovery time as well as conserving your natural breast.

Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy

Surgery to remove the breast while leaving the skin, nipple, and areola in place. This procedure should be considered when you’re choosing breast reconstructive surgery immediately following the mastectomy. The benefits include preserving your breast skin and nipple and the potential to regain sensation in the nipple when combined with flap surgery.

Bilateral Mastectomy

Surgery to remove both breasts is an option when choosing preventive mastectomy to reduce risk if diagnosed with the BRCA gene mutation. This procedure allows for a symmetrical appearance with options for breast reconstructive surgery.

Total Mastectomy

Surgery to remove the entire breast, including the skin, nipple, and areola may be the best option for treating invasive breast cancers. Breast reconstructive surgery may be performed at the same time or at a later date.

 AND REMEMBER…
