What Is Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

Breast reconstruction surgery is designed to bring your breasts back to their original size and shape after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. Typically, it is women who have breast cancer who get this type of surgery. The procedure can replace a full breast or just the partial amount that was removed, depending on the extent of the cancer. Essentially, the surgery strives to achieve the same, or similar, sizing and shape as before the mastectomy through rebuilding the breast mound with:

About The Breast Reconstruction Procedure

In most cases, the breast reconstruction procedure is performed at the same time as the mastectomy or lumpectomy. Your surgeon will insert an expander, like an empty implant, under your skin or chest muscles. As you recover from the mastectomy or lumpectomy, your surgeon will gradually add saline or silicone to the expander balloon, helping your skin to stretch to the appropriate size. Once you have reached your desired size, the surgeon will replace the expander with a permanent silicone or saline implant of the same size.

Breast reconstruction can also be done using living tissue from other areas of your body. Typically, this tissue is taken from your abdomen, but it can also come from your butt, thighs or other areas you wish to minimize.

About The Breast Reconstruction Recovery Process

During the first couple of months after the procedure, you’ll likely experience some pain and swelling. Your doctor may prescribe you something to help with the pain. As for the swelling, your breasts may look much larger than you had expected at first, but rest assured that the swelling will subside over time, making your breasts look more natural.

In the early days of your recovery, it is best to wear a soft, supportive bra with no underwires, like a sports bra. This will minimize bounce and reduce pain levels. You should try to avoid raising your arms overhead whenever possible to reduce the risk of pulling out your stitches. You should take it easy as much as possible during this time to allow your body to heal. Your doctor can advise you when it is safe to resume your normal activities.
