What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery reduces the size of your breasts by removing excess fat, tissue, and skin. This procedure is growing more common as women seek breasts in better proportion to their bodies. Although many women undergo this procedure for medical reasons, aiming to relieve back pain and discomfort, more are electing to have the surgery for cosmetic reasons as well.

Breast reduction surgery, commonly known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure wherein excess breast fat, skin, and granular tissue are removed to reshape and reduce the size of the breasts while alleviating many of the health and emotional troubles associated with overly large breasts.

It is not just women who undergo the procedure, but men as well. For men, the procedure tightens the chest area, allowing the pectoral muscles to show through and minimizing the appearance of “man boobs.” Surprisingly, this is an affliction that affects about half of adult men.

How Do You Know If You Need A Breast Reduction?

When your breasts are overly large, you may experience significant back pain, also called macromastia, due to the excess weight. This can make it difficult to maintain proper posture, causing your shoulders to hunch forward. In some cases, your breasts may not be overly large in a general sense, but rather out of proportion with the rest of your body, like if you have narrow hips and shoulders. Larger breasts may look disproportionate on a smaller frame.

Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

After undergoing breast reduction surgery, most patients quickly notice the following benefits:

  • Smaller, lighter, and more firm breasts
  • Better proportion to the rest of the body
  • Less physical discomfort, including neck and backaches

One of the key benefits of breast reduction surgery is that it can alleviate the associated pain and discomfort. When your body feels better, you’ll find it easier to get through your daily activities, including chores, exercise and spending time with your family. If you were self-conscious about your body before the surgery, it can give you renewed confidence and boost your self-esteem. When your body is in proper proportion, you’ll find it easier to find clothes that fit properly and flatter your body, making you feel even more confident in your skin.

How The Breast Reduction Procedure Works

Dr. Michael J. Streitmann will consult with you to determine the appropriate breast reduction technique based on:

  • Your individual preferences and condition
  • Your desired amount of reduction
  • Your unique breast composition

You’ll be placed under general anesthesia for the duration of the procedure. Your surgeon will make an incision in each breast to allow for the removal of excess tissue. The specific location and configuration of the incisions will depend on some factors, including the original size of your breasts and your doctor’s preferences.

The surgeon will remove excess fat and tissue from your breasts, tightening the remaining skin around them to keep them firm. Before closing up the incision, your doctor will ensure that everything is settling right and in proper proportion. The end goal is for your smaller breasts to look as natural as possible.

When the breast reduction is complete, results will be immediately visible – and over time, swelling will lessen while the incision lines fade; giving you an opportunity to truly enjoy the satisfaction that comes along with having smaller, lighter, and more firm breasts.

Breast Reduction Recovery And After-Care

In most cases, you’ll be able to go home within a few hours of the procedure, though you’ll need someone to drive you home as the anesthesia wears off. You may notice some bruising, swelling and discomfort for the first couple of weeks, but you should be able to go back to work in about two weeks, as long as your job doesn’t require physical labor. Typically, you’ll be feeling back to normal within two months.

From the time you go home, your breasts will continue to shift and resettle. Over the ensuing weeks, you’ll notice that their appearance grows more and more natural. Any scarring will fade over time as well. You should avoid intense physical activity and exercise for about a month after your surgery. Once your doctor gives you the all-clear, you can resume your normal activities.
