What Facelift Surgery Can And Can’t Do

A facelift consists of a number of procedures that can tighten skin, reshaping areas like the face and neck. Generally, excess skin and fat are excised while the remaining skin is tightened using advanced surgical procedures. This reduces wrinkles and can be used to control certain other aging factors, like sun damage.

A facelift does not consist of any work on the underlying bone structure. For that reason, it will not significantly change facial features. A brow lift, eye lid surgery, or rhinoplasty, may provide more profound changes to the appearance.

Preparing For Facelift Surgery

Before undergoing facelift surgery, it is required that you schedule a consultation with a qualified surgeon. It’s essential that the patient review “before and after” photos to understand the type of results that can be achieved. It may be necessary for some patients to briefly discontinue certain medications or change a specific lifestyle or dietary habits. It’s also important to make plans for getting to and from the facility, as many procedures require general anesthesia that may take time to wear off fully.

Facelift Procedure Steps

A facelift begins with anesthesia, which may be administered intravenously or in the form of a general anesthetic. The most common facelift requires a single incision running from the hairline to the lower scalp. Fat can be redistributed, the underlying tissue is sculpted, and muscles are lifted.

Once the procedure is complete, any incisions are closed using sutures or skin glue. Many of today’s sutures dissolve harmlessly after a few days, but a follow-up visit may be necessary to remove them instead. Anesthesia is withdrawn and the patient gently awakens.

How Long is Facelift Recovery – What to Expect

Recovery time for facelift surgery varies depending on the procedure. The most complex surgeries may require pain medication. A bandage is placed on the patient’s face to minimize swelling and small tubes, called drains, may be placed to draw off excess fluids.

Strenuous activity should be avoided, but most patients can return to work within a short time. Results are visible in the mirror as swelling subsides – complete results are usually seen within a month or two. A follow-up appointment is generally scheduled within two weeks.
