What Is Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a personalized procedure that can rejuvenate the labia minora and/or majora to be smaller and shapelier. Have you been feeling discomfort during physical activities? Or maybe you’ve removed hair in the bikini line and become distressed by the size of your inner vaginal lips? Regardless of the reason, a labial reduction can be used to:

  • Shorten or reshape the labia minora
  • Reduce the size & improve symmetry of the labia minora
  • Decrease discomfort & make physical activities more enjoyable

Dr. Michael J. Streitmann will consult with you to discuss your expectations and desired outcome, as well as any potential risks or concerns, in order to ensure the success of the surgery. Once the labial reduction is complete, visible bruising and swelling should begin to resolve within a couple of weeks, however, vigorous activities should be avoided for at least 3 weeks.

Benefits of Labiaplasty and Vaginal Rejuvenation

The exact benefits of labiaplasty near Houston, TX and vaginal rejuvenation depend on the goals of the individual. These are some of the most common outcomes of a labial reduction:

    • Reduction of enlarged, stretched, or excess tissue from the labia.
Improve symmetry by reshaping uneven labial tissue.
    • Minimize the risk of UTIs and yeast infections.
    • Address pain or discomfort from wearing tight clothing, exercising, and/or engaging in sexual activity.
    • Improve self-confidence and overall quality of life.

Most patients are very happy with the results of their labiaplasties. This procedure impacts a delicate area that may cause feelings of self-consciousness if you are not happy with its appearance. This is an effective way to address those concerns.

Labiaplasty Candidates

Anyone who has elongated and/or asymmetrical labia can be a candidate for this procedure, provided that they are generally in good health. An unwanted labial appearance may stem from childbirth, trauma, substantial weight loss, menopause, genetics, or simple aging.

Generally, the best candidates are those who have experienced physical discomfort and/or embarrassment due to the size and/or shape of their labia. If you think that you may be a good candidate for a labial reduction, Dr. Streimann will be happy to assess your situation during a consultation. He will ensure that you are a fit for this procedure and talk to you about your desired outcomes. If relevant, he may recommend alternative treatments.

Labiaplasty Procedure

The labiaplasty procedure is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using either sedation or general anesthesia. In most cases, it takes less than an hour to complete. This will be performed in one of our fully equipped surgical suites.

The specifics of the procedure depend on your situation and goals. Some common techniques include edge trimming, central wedge excision, and double wedge excision. The goal is to reduce the amount of tissue in the labia minora and/or majora and to achieve a shapelier appearance per your preferences. Some patients also request a clitoral hood reduction, which removes tissue around the clitoris.

During your consultation, Dr. Streitmann will discuss the specific techniques that will be used. He will also address any questions or concerns you may have about the procedure, recovery, or anything else related to your labiaplasty.

Labiaplasty Recovery

The procedure can cause some bruising and/or swelling in the treatment area. There will likely be some discomfort; however, significant pain is rare. Medication can be used to address any discomfort you may experience.

Most patients can resume normal day-to-day activities within a few days. However, strenuous activity, sexual intercourse, and vigorous exercise should be avoided four to six weeks after the procedure. All swelling and bruising should be gone by this time, and the treatment area should be fully healed. We will provide specific recovery instructions based on your procedure.

Labiaplasty Scars

Although all surgical procedures produce some scars, Dr. Streitmann goes to great lengths to minimize and conceal scars as much as possible. Additionally, any scars from the procedure become less visible with time. For the vast majority of patients, the scars from labiaplasty are all but undetectable. Most patients are very happy with the results of this procedure and have little visible evidence of having had a labiaplasty.

Does Labiaplasty Hurt?

During the procedure, we will apply an anesthetic to ensure that there is minimal discomfort. Following the surgery, there can be some swelling and minor pain. Significant pain is rare. However, oral pain medication is typically sufficient to manage even the most severe cases of discomfort.

Following recovery instructions carefully can help to minimize residual pain. In particular, sitting for long periods in the days following the procedure can worsen the pain. Our team will monitor your recovery process, and you can contact us at any time should you feel any unmanageable pain or unexpected side effects.

Labiaplasty Cost

The cost of the procedure varies from patient to patient. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the national average is around $3,000. Typically, insurance does not cover this procedure; however, there may be some exceptions in some instances.

During your consultation, Dr. Streitmann will develop an individualized treatment plan for you. Following this, we will be able to provide a specific estimate of the cost. If relevant, Dr. Streitmann may recommend alternative treatment options.
