During the aging process, one of the first areas to exhibit signs of aging is around the eyes. At some point, everyone notices the signs: under-eye bags, dark circles, or sagging upper eyelids. For some people, these signs are bothersome as they result in a more tired, less rejuvenated appearance. But there is a simple, relatively minor cosmetic surgery to bring youth back to your eye area!

Dr. Michael J. Streitmann, M.D. offers cosmetic eyelid surgery, also called a blepharoplasty, to improve the appearance of the eyelids and achieve a more youthful look. Your eyes are one of the first things that people notice about you. This is a way for you to get the younger, more energetic look you desire. What Is Blepharoplasty?

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure that improves the appearance of upper or lower eyelids, or both, to give a more youthful appearance while making you look well-rested. In particular, cosmetic eyelid surgery can be used to treat:

  • Excess fatty deposits/puffiness in the upper eyelid area
  • Excess skin and/or fine wrinkles in the lower eyelid area
  • Dark circles/bags under the eyes
  • Droopy skin under the lower eyelid area

Dr. Michael J. Streitmann will consult with you to discuss your expectations and desired outcome and any potential risks or concerns to ensure the success of the surgery. Once the cosmetic eyelid surgery is complete, you are able to notice a smooth, well-defined eye area that helps you appear well-rested and alert. Using the latest techniques and best practices, we can achieve very natural results with very minimal signs of the procedure.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

Patients often turn to eyelid surgery because it can rejuvenate the eye area and help them look and feel younger. The benefits and outcomes depend on the specifics of each patient’s needs and procedure. These are some of the most common benefits of blepharoplasty:

  • More youthful, energetic look
  • Fewer signs of exhaustion or aging in the eye area
  • Reduced appearance of wrinkles around the eyes
  • Reduced bagginess, dark circles, or puffiness below the eyes
  • Reduction of excess fat around the eyes, creating a smoother look
  • Reduction of excess skin along with a tightening of remaining skin in the upper eyelid area
  • Improved vision from the elimination of excess, overhanging skin

Dr. Michael Streitmanns Approach to Blepharoplasty

The techniques used for eyelid surgery have improved dramatically since the procedure was first introduced in the 1960s. In particular, the modern approach includes maintaining some fat around the eyes and sculpting it rather than total removal. The result is a smoother, more youthful look that avoids the “hollow” appearance of earlier procedures.

Dr. Streitmann uses the latest techniques and best practices to ensure the best possible results for his patients. Plus, he carefully analyzes each patient’s needs and circumstances to provide more individualized procedures.

Am I a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Typically, patients who are in relatively good overall health and who have some signs of aging or exhaustion around the eyes are candidates for blepharoplasty. During your consultation, Dr. Streitmann will determine whether you are a good candidate for this procedure. If necessary, he may recommend alternative solutions.

How Is the Eyelid Surgery Procedure Performed?

In most cases, incisions are made in the upper eyelid crease and just below the lower eyelashes. This makes any scarring virtually undetectable. If fat needs to be removed from the lower eyelid, the incision may be made inside the lid.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Once the incision in the crease is made, the excess fat and skin can be removed. Dr. Streitmann typically avoids removing muscle and too much fat, instead opting to sculpt and

tighten what is already there. The advantage of this is a more youthful and energetic-looking result. In particular, the lower portion of the upper lid and the infraorbital region (below the eyelids) will look markedly improved. Relatively subtle changes can enhance the appearance of the entire eye area.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

The lower eyelid surgery typically involves a more significant removal of fat. Protruding fat is the cause of bagginess below the eyes. Some fat is retained and repositioned to help achieve the desired final look. Additionally, excess skin may be removed, and the remainder is tightened.

Some patients have “hollow” areas due to aging. This can be treated with fillers to add volume and youthfulness to the area. Alternatively, fat can be transferred from other areas to fill out the space below the eye.

What Is Eyelid Surgery Recovery Like?

Typically, the recovery process after eyelid surgery is quick and with minimal pain. Patients will typically have stitches removed after four days and return to most normal activities within five to seven days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for about two weeks. Eye drops can help with comfort during recovery for a week or so.

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost?

As an elective surgery, blepharoplasty is not typically covered by insurance. We price every procedure based on the needs of the individual. Schedule a consultation to learn how much eyelid surgery will cost you.

Asian Blepharoplasty

Some individuals, particularly those of Asian descent, have a “single fold” in the upper eyelid and prefer to have a “double fold” to achieve a larger eye appearance. Dr. Streitmann can perform this surgery, sometimes called double eyelid surgery, following an initial consultation.

Is Eyelid Lift Without Surgery Possible?

Yes, some non-surgical options can restore a youthful appearance to the eyes. For example, dermal fillers such as Sculptra®, Radiesse®, and Juvederm™ can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fill out hollowness under the eye. Other treatments include SkinPen, Botox, and others.

However, eyelid surgery is the best way to improve the appearance of the eyes. When you come for your consultation, Dr. Streitmann will guide you on which procedures are right for you.

What Are Some of the Procedures That Can Complement Eyelid Surgery?

Other facial procedures can complement blepharoplasty. For example, a brow lift or facelift may help you to achieve your desired look. Additionally, some non-surgical procedures such as fillers can help to accentuate the benefits of eyelid surgery.
