Proper sun protection is unquestionably key in reducing the risk of both cancer and slowing the visible signs of aging, but many individuals are still not doing enough to safeguard their skin. Simple measures such as high-quality sunscreen, hats, and other protective efforts can have a marked impact on your skin health – and yet, many individuals might be surprised to learn that their sun protection efforts are falling short.

One of the most common misconceptions about sun protection is that for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), a darker skin tone equates to a lowered need for protective measures. Understandably, many people of color assume that they are at a lower risk of sun damage and skin cancer when compared to individuals with light or fair skin tones. However, sun protection is vital for people of all complexions, and being aware of the risks of sun exposure can make all the difference for both your long-term health and happiness.

Below, we are answering many of the most frequently asked questions about sun protection, anti-aging, and skin cancer risk for BIPOC.

Do BIPOC communities have a lower risk of skin cancer?

While there is some evidence that skin cancer may be less prevalent in people of color, that does not mean that you can assume a darker skin tone automatically protects you from potential risk. In fact, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, even though skin cancer is less common for BIPOC groups when it does occur, it can come with late-stage diagnosis and a more severe prognosis.

For example, a recent study found that there was an average five-year melanoma survival rate for 91 percent of white people. However, the same study discovered that only 65 percent of people of color had the same survival rate. Late-stage diagnoses of melanoma are also much more common for Black and Hispanic patients when compared to non-Hispanic white individuals.

Why are BIPOC communities more likely to get a late-stage melanoma diagnosis and have a poor prognosis?

There are a few different factors that put people of color at a greater risk of late diagnosis for skin cancer:

  • One of the biggest skin cancer myths is that BIPOC communities have next to no risk of developing skin cancer. Because of that, using sun protection and conducting regular skin checks is often less of a priority. Even though the chances of a person of color getting skin cancer may be slightly lower, sun protection is just as important.
  • Many healthcare providers are also aware of the slightly decreased risk for skin cancer in BIPOC, so they may be less likely to recommend and conduct full-body skin exams. As a result, areas of concern may not go undetected for quite some time.
  • Finally, darker skin-toned people often develop skin cancer in less visible areas, making it even more challenging to detect early-on. For example, the soles of the feet are an extremely common spot for melanoma for people of color.

Ultimately, the takeaway is that even for people of color, sun protection is critically important for both cancer prevention and anti-aging.

What is the best sun protection for people of color?

For many people with darker skin tones, sunscreen presents a unique aesthetic challenge: mineral-based sunscreens can leave a white residue and ashen look. As a result, many people of color shy away from regularly applying sunscreen. But now, the sunscreen industry is answering the demand for sunscreen for darker skin tones. Formulations with nanoparticles (in which active ingredients have been micronized), can be an ideal option for people of color. These types of sunscreen offer excellent sun protection without having a chalky effect on the skin.

In addition to sunscreen, there are many other ways to protect yourself from the damaging rays of the sun:

  • Stay in the shade as much as possible. For example, if you are spending time by the pool, opt for a seat underneath a large umbrella.
  • Use protective clothing and accessories, such as hats, long-sleeved shirts and pants, and sunglasses whenever possible. Make sure to check the sun protection rating on each of these items to confirm that they are an effective barrier against UV rays.
  • Avoid tanning beds, as even irregular visits can increase your risk of skin cancer. While it might be tempting to schedule a tanning session to get a summertime glow, tanning beds actually cause your skin to age at a faster rate. The result? Your skin not only wrinkles more quickly but can also be damaged to the point of potential melanoma.

What is the best anti-aging cream for people of color?

It is not surprising that one of the most common questions we receive from both BIPOC and fair-skinned patients alike has to do with the best anti-aging products for reducing wrinkles, fine lines, and other skin concerns. And no matter your skin tone, texture, age, or type, our answer is always the same: the best product for anti-aging is an excellent sunscreen, applied frequently and properly.

In addition to sun protection, incorporating professional-grade products into your skincare regimen is an excellent way to slow down the visible signs of aging and support a glowing complexion.
